Portrait Photography

This week I wanted to take the more difficult approach and try to capture a decent portrait of something that wasn't a person. I took a picture of my brothers rabbit at angle that makes you want to ask what exactly he is looking at. Same thing with the other photo of the figure of the girl with heart wings. It was cool to experience with the portrait setting on my camera and how it differs from some of the other settings on the camera. It was a bit difficult to get just the right angle especially with the rabbit who didn't want to sit still.

  1. I love to see when somebody takes this assignment in a new direction. Portraits of people are difficult. Not only do you have to understand how your camera works and how the light works, but you also have to be able to figure out how the person works as well and that can be the most difficult part.

The portrait of the rabbit is awesome. You have the rabbit on the left looking across the field of view and as you pointed out, it helps the viewer wonder what's going on. The second photo of the figurine… So-so. You have centered the figurine in the photograph and the flash flattens out the figure. The background is very distracting as well for it is almost more interesting than the figurine. When making a portrait, you want the focus to be on the subject, which means that you need to minimize the background distractions.

Keep working on this alternate idea of portrait and I think you'll be onto something good. First photo indicates this to me.

  2. Nice job. I like how you photographed different subjects than people. My favorite is the bunny, of course because he's cute and more appealing to look at than the Angel. I like that in each photo you took a different angle than straight on the subject. You're right, the angle of the bunny make me wonder what he's looking at.

  3. What a lovely portrait of your rabbit! I like how the shadows add a new dimension to the photo.
